More Than Four decades ago, Swedish Journalists cam toAmerica to make a documentary about the Black Powermovement. The footage, Including interviews with StokeleyCarmichael, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver, WAS filedaway in a vault for 30 years. This important historical Chronicle onPBS's Independent Lens surfaces as The Black Power Mixtape1967-1975, augmented by commentary by contemporary artistslike Erykah Badu, Questlove and Talib Kweli.
"It Gave me a personal context for my Existence," Kweli saysabout the documentary, explaining HIS That Parents "Were metin 1968 and very active in Student Movements in New York at thetime. I was born in 1975. So it Gives me a context for the ideasThat created me. "When He Got Involved HIS manager, who'dseen the footage, Told Him about it and he Arranged to meet withthe Filmmakers When he WAS on tour in Sweden. "They Showedme the footage and taped the conversation we ever had while I was watching the movie. Society is different than it WAS in the'60s and '70s Racism But we have that's more subversive, lesssubtle, "he reflects, Comparing the eras. "If you're nationalist orcultural now, You Can not wear it on your sleeve."

Off screen, Kweli Celebrates Black History Month by working atHIS craft - he's collaborating on new music with Mos Def for TheirBlack Star Project and is touring with HIS soul-rock group IdleWarship with crying prepositions releasing a new album,Prisoner of Conscious, in March. Also he emphasizes theImportance of cultural heritage to HIS kids, son Amani Fela, 15,and daughter Diani Eshe, 12.
"I learned from My Parents That Give your children you have toPowerful names," he says, explaining HIS choices of Africannames. "It starts with That, and THEN you have to have images inthe house of your Ancestors and your culture. And you have to docultural things with your family. The only way to really appreciatesomebody else's culture is to embrace your own, "Kweli believes."If you embrace your culture and hold it tight, hold it close, Will itmake you love Someone else's culture Because you'll love theway everyone is different."
